The NSW Branch is delighted to invite you to their 2024 Paediatrics Symposium, Saturday 14 September 2024. 

Dive into the world of paediatric pharmacy at the SHPA NSW Branch Paediatric Symposium. Join us for a balanced agenda featuring topics such as paediatric cardiology, neurology, infectious disease and critical care.

This symposium is suited for those new to paediatrics and those with experience. Don't miss this opportunity to network with your peers and expand your paediatric knowledge at this exciting symposium.

Michael Stokes

Michael is the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) pharmacist at the Children's Hospital at Westmead with over 7 years of experience in paediatrics. He has significant clinical experience across a variety of paediatric speciality areas including transplant, cardiology, and electronic medications management. He is also is a PhD candidate with the University of Sydney, with his main research interests being sedation and analgesia in PICU, and ECMO pharmacology. 

Dr Coen Butters

Coen is a general paediatrician and paediatric infectious diseases physician. He combines his clinical work with research at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and teaching at the University of Newcastle. 

Coen looks after children and young people with a range of general paediatric issues and has specialist experience in infectious diseases (eg. immunisations, common and unusual infections, recurrent fever, infections in the immunocompromised). Coen also provides comprehensive travel medicine and immunisation advice for families planning to travel overseas. 

Dr Alexandra Johnson

Dr Alexandra (Alex) Johnson is a Paediatric Neurologist working in both the public and private sectors in Sydney, Australia. She has positions at Sydney Children’s Hospital (Randwick) and Royal North Shore Hospital. Alex contributes to teaching and research at Sydney Children’s Hospital (Randwick) as well as organising the online lecture program for paediatric neurology trainees from around Australia and New Zealand. Alex has an ongoing interest in factors contributing to epilepsy including  genetics, epilepsy syndromes, and epilepsy education and is an ongoing  investigator in studies regarding Angelman Syndrome, canabinoids in severe childhood epilepsy and rare diseases. She is also interested in the translation of emerging research in rare neurological diseases  (including gene and enzyme therapies) to prevent neurodegeneration and ongoing cognitive and physical disability

Tony Lai

Tony Lai is the senior AMS pharmacist at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. He has been a clinical pharmacist for over 15 years in an extensive range of hospitals around Sydney. He lectures and is a PhD candidate at The University of Sydney with research interests in PK/PD. 

Bradley Rockliff

Brad is the Senior Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist at Sydney Children’s Hospital. He is an experienced pharmacist with a range of subspeciality practice such as paediatric antimicrobial stewardship and infectious diseases, critical care including cardiology and emergency medicine as well as immunocompromised populations such as solid organ transplant and oncology. He has a keen interest in prevention and management of infectious diseases in immunocompromised hosts.    

Dr David Youssef

Dr David Youssef completed undergraduate training at the University of Sydney and post-graduate training at Griffith University, obtaining a Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, respectively. During his medical training, he gained experience at several hospitals, including Gold Coast, Prince Charles, Tweed Heads and Liverpool Hospital. He undertook a three-year posting at the Sydney Children's Network, where he focused on Paediatric Cardiology training. 
 
In 2020, he undertook two fellowships at The Stollery Children's Hospital, Edmonton, Canada, in the fields of Paediatric Echocardiography and 3-Dimensional imaging and Paediatric Pulmonary Hypertension. 
 
On completion of his Paediatric Cardiology training, Dr Youssef has returned to Australia, where he currently runs a Paediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Pilot program integrating multidisciplinary care and treatment of complex Paediatric Pulmonary Hypertension patients. In addition, he has recently been involved in the development of a multidisciplinary Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) clinic of graduates from the neonatal intensive care unit. 
 
Dr Youssef continues to work across the Sydney Children's Hospital Network, including both Randwick and Westmead Campus. 

Group 2 accreditation is being sought for this event.

Cancellation policy

  • Membership rate is only applicable if you are a member at the time of the seminar. Should your membership lapse, or if you resign you will be invoiced for the difference in registration.
  • Cancellations must be made in writing.
  • Cancellations received before 6 weeks prior to the event will receive a full refund. Non-members will be charged a $50 handling fee.
  • Cancellations received between 6 weeks and 1 week prior to the event will receive a 50% refund of the registration fee.
  • Cancellations received less than a week prior to the event will NOT be refunded.
  • SHPA reserve the right to cancel a seminar or make changes to the program
  • If SHPA cancels or defers the event you will receive 100% of the registration fee but SHPA bears no responsibility for any costs incurred  (such as flights, accommodation, travel or expenses) or loss of income.
  • It is recommended that participants obtain adequate insurance cover for travel and accommodation.
  • Transfer of registration – as an alternative to cancellation your registration may be transferred to another member of your organisation or another event (if the chosen seminar is a higher cost you will be subject to further charges). A request MUST be made in writing to the Federal Secretariat prior to the event.
  • If you are unable to attend SHPA policy is that handouts can not be made available as ‘stand alone’ materials

Venue/Accessbility requirements

  • For special accessibility requirements for in-person events please complete the relevant section when registering online and this information will be forwarded to third parties.
  • SHPA are in no way responsible for any connectivity issues as a result of the participants internet connection or hardware issues or other external factors impacting the internet, that are out of SHPA’s control.

Catering/Dietary requirements

  • Please complete the necessary section when registering online. SHPA will notify third parties such as caterers/suppliers of any dietary requirements.
  • Whilst every care is taken to notify venues of dietary requirements, SHPA cannot guarantee completely allergy free meals, nor be held responsible for any adverse reaction. Any registrant who has notified SHPA of a dietary requirement should make themselves known to the seminar coordinator and/or venue staff upon their arrival.
  • Some dietary requirements such as Kosher meals may incur an additional cost which is the responsilbility of the delegate. SHPA will notify you in advance.

Recording/Filming

  • Recording and/or filming is not permitted by registrants. Please note this event may be recorded for the SHPA website and/or photos may be taken for use in SHPA resources and publications.
  • Registrants are not permitted to record or film any part of SHPA events in any format including audio recording or video recording or through use of mobile devices for filming

  • Numbers are capped so book early to avoid disappointment. Please note the only way to guarantee a space is to register online. Please ensure you register prior to booking your flights and accommodation.
  • If you do not receive a confirmation email then you are not registered for the event and will not be able to be accommodated on the day of the event. If you are following up on registration please ensure you contact the Federal Secretariat at least a week prior to the event.
