Success story: Turning Medicines Management insights into practice
Ciara McLennan, FANZCAP (Edu., Generalist) shared her Medicines Management story, back to 2022 when she 'had the privilege of serving as an abstract reviewer'.

When Ciara McLennan FANZCAP (Edu., Generalist) reviewed an abstract on 'The Druggle – improving paediatric oncology drug knowledge in real time' ahead of Medicines Management 2022, she recognised an opportunity.
Shortly after, her hospital's Acute Medical Unit sought help reducing medication-related harm. The conference connection was perfectly timed.
'Attending Medicines Management gave me direct access to the program creators,' explains Ciara, who is Formulary Management Pharmacist, Canberra Hospital, AdPha ACT Branch CE Coordinator, and a member of the MM2025 Scientific Program Committee this year.
'Their insights helped me adapt the concept for our adult ward with high patient turnover.'
The result? 'Med Monday' – a weekly, brief learning program that became pharmacist-delivered but nursing-driven. Beyond reducing medication incidents, it fostered inter-professional collaboration and created a safe space to review medications and discuss recent incidents.
'The key to success was maintaining the Druggle's core elements: short format and consistent weekly sessions,' says Ciara.
The program's success led to hospital-wide implementation, a 'Best Conference Poster' award at the local hospital research conference in 2023, a poster presentation at MM2024, and an upcoming feature at an Allied Health advanced practice conference.
Don't miss opportunities like these!
