Campuses - Horsham and Dimboola

Wimmera Health Care Group forms part of Grampians Health and is the major specialist referral centre for the Wimmera and Southern Mallee region of Victoria, servicing an area of 61,000 square kilometres and a population of approximately 54,000 people. We have campuses in Horsham and Dimboola and provide emergency and critical care services for adults and children.

Every year, Wimmera Health Care Group treats many inpatients, emergency patients and outpatients. With a workforce of approximately 1100 staff, we are the largest employer in the region.

About the region

Wimmera Health Care Group is based in the Wimmera sub-region of the Grampians, 310 km west of Melbourne, 420 km east of Adelaide and in close proximity to the Grampians National Park.

To the east, the Grampians are a stunning mountain range and popular tourist destination with hiking and rock climbing popular in the area.

While to the north-west the Southern-Mallee includes the Big and Little Deserts with great four-wheel-driving, motorbike tracks and camping.

In the middle is the Wimmera, vast cropping plains making up Victoria's wheat belt. The Wimmera River snakes through the region, originating in the Grampians and finishing at Lake Hindmarsh.

The region is dotted with lakes, often appearing like an oasis out of the often-harsh landscapes.

This diverse region has contrasting beauty and offers a wide range of lifestyle opportunities.

Pharmacy Department

The Pharmacy Department provides services (including an extensive medication reconciliation service) to the acute wards within WHCG including medical, surgical and midwifery beds. There is an Intensive Care Unit, Operating Theatre, a busy Emergency Department and a growing Day Oncology Unit in addition to a Sub Acute unit. Services are also extended to supplying medications and information for smaller rural hospitals. We also have an outpatient prescription service.

We have a Medication Safety pharmacist and participate in Clinical Risk reduction programmes.  Most recently we became approved to provide partnered pharmacist medication charting (PPMC) services by credentialed pharmacists.

The Pharmacy Department employs 12 pharmacists and 6 Pharmacy technicians in a combination of full time and part time roles. We have two pharmacy intern positions available pet year.

Hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm and Saturday 9am to 12pm with an on-call Pharmacist available outside these hours 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Intern program information

Interns at WHCG will participate in a rotational training programme across most clinical areas of the hospital and in the dispensary, supervised by experienced pharmacists. They will gain valuable experience across a wide range of services provided within our department.

A weekly tutorial program is set up and weekly meetings with their preceptor to discuss any issues with the program or other matters as they arise.

Opportunities also exist to gain experience within a rural community pharmacy.

We accept interns enrolled in either the Monash or PSA intern programs.
