About the Pharmacy Intern Training Program

Clinical skills and knowledge build during the 20-week breadth rotations in a variety of clinical areas (respiratory, cardiology, psychiatry, gastroenterology, neurology, emergency department). Shorter additional experiences include infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship, intensive care, theatres, perioperative care and an in-depth case review and patient home visit with community care pharmacy team. The final 12 weeks include work-ready experience with increasing responsibility and autonomy in surgery, medicine and dispensary. The intern program at Peninsula Health is 80% clinically focused.
Sites at which interns will work
Pharmacy interns work mainly at Frankston Hospital with a rotation under Quality Use of Medicine program at campuses (The Mornington Centre, Gold Links Road and Rosebud Hospital for 1 week each). Interns are encouraged to be involved in patient care, pharmacy interventions and to liaise with medical, nursing staff and external pharmacies and nursing homes. Dispensary rotation provides interns the opportunity to develop skills in outpatient counselling, dispensing and responding to drug information enquiries. In addition, interns further develop their skills in extemporaneous manufacturing for both inpatients and outpatients. Across all experiences, interns will utilise Peninsula Health’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system and manage medications through our Electronic Medication Management (EMM) system. Research project development, ethics application and support is provided by research supervisors.
