More than 500 of us work in our Pharmacy Team, providing Clinical, Operational and Quality pharmacy services to patients in our hospitals and community settings. We are a diverse group of professionals, focused on achieving the best outcomes and experiences for our community. Our 460 pharmacists and 130 support staff work across seven sites in 30 clinical and 10 Operational Teams.

Intern program information

The Monash Health Pharmacy Department provides a structured intern training program, which includes orientation to each pharmacy practice area and learning objectives and assessments for each rotation.  

Campuses at which intern pharmacists will work:

  • Monash Medical Centre
  • Dandenong Hospital
  • Moorabbin Hospital
  • Casey Hospital
  • Kingston Centre
  • Monash Children’s Hospital
  • Victorian Heart Hospital

Intern pharmacists are required to undertake the Monash University Intern Training Program. Enrolment in the Monash University Intern Foundation Program is highly recommended to enable intern pharmacists to complete a university higher qualification by the conclusion of their intern training year. These programs recognise the high quality workplace learning offered by Monash Health.

Intern pharmacists are:

  • Rotated through each pharmacy practice area and are rostered for weekend and late shift work. The program places great emphasis on active learning.  Weekly tutorials are given by expert pharmacists or visiting speakers and cover a wide range of topics including medication management, patient counselling and communication, hospital administration, various clinical specialties and primary health care. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of clinically orientated skills.
  • Rostered to ward/unit based clinical pharmacy services for 31 weeks of their 48 weeks training, which include specialties such as renal & pancreas transplants, cardiology and cardiothoracics, haematology & oncology, general medicine, orthopaedics, colorectal, paediatrics, maternity health, mental health, emergency medicine, movement disorders and more. The program also provides experiential training in Quality Use of Medicines, Medicines Information, Dispensary, Compounding and Medication Review services.  During the year, intern pharmacists undertake individual projects and will be required to make several presentations, including a continuing education session to the Pharmacy Department.
  • Well supported at Monash Health by their clinical supervisors and our dedicated clinical educators. Each intern pharmacist is paired up with a mentor pharmacist to assist in professional development. Regular individual catch-ups with the intern coordinator are scheduled to discuss both internship training, academic study progress and wellbeing.
